English tutoring FAQ
What does an online English tutor help with?
An English teacher can help with reading comprehension, essay planning and paragraph structure, grammar, literary analysis, and revising the assignments set in the student's own course.
How much does an online English tutor cost?
Rates vary by teacher and are shown on each teacher's card and profile.
Are Genie English teachers certified teachers?
Teachers display their teaching certifications on their profiles, so families can review the credentials shown for each teacher before choosing.
Which English courses and grades do you cover?
Teachers cover elementary English through Grade 12, including Ontario's de-streamed Grade 9 course (ENL1W), Grade 10 English (ENG2D, ENG2P), and the Grade 11 and 12 courses (ENG3U, ENG3C, ENG4U, ENG4C). Each teacher profile lists the grades that teacher covers.
Can an English teacher help with essay writing?
Yes, and it is one of the most common reasons families come to us. A teacher can work on planning, thesis and paragraph structure, evidence, and the revision of a draft the student has already written.
Can an English teacher help with the OSSLT?
Yes. The Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test is written in Grade 10 and the diploma depends on passing it or completing the literacy course. A teacher can work through reading passages and the written response formats using practice material.
How is a certified teacher different from a regular English tutor?
A certified teacher is trained to teach a curriculum and assess it, not only to read and write well. Each Genie profile lists the teaching certifications that teacher has on file, so families can compare credentials before choosing.
